6 Tips to Save Fuel on Road Trips

Small habits can cut fuel expenses by 15–25% over a long trip.

01
Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure

Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and can reduce fuel efficiency by 2–3%. Check tyre pressure monthly and before long trips.

02
Avoid Aggressive Acceleration

Rapid acceleration and hard braking waste fuel. Smooth, steady driving can improve mileage by up to 20% on city roads.

03
Drive at Optimal Highway Speed

Most cars deliver peak fuel efficiency between 60–80 km/h. Driving at 100+ km/h increases aerodynamic drag significantly, burning more fuel.

04
Use AC Wisely

Air conditioning can reduce mileage by 8–12%. Below 80 km/h, turn off AC and open windows. At highway speeds, AC is more efficient than open windows.

05
Keep the Engine Tuned

A poorly tuned engine with dirty air filters, fouled spark plugs, or thick old engine oil can reduce mileage by 10–25%. Regular servicing pays off.

06
Remove Unnecessary Weight

Every extra 100 kg reduces fuel efficiency by about 1 km/l. Clear out heavy items from the boot before a long trip if they won't be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about this free online tool.

The formula is straightforward: Fuel Required (L) = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/l). Then Fuel Cost = Fuel Required × Fuel Price per Litre. If you enable Round Trip, the distance is doubled before the calculation. All values update live as you type.

The presets use realistic Indian averages: Bikes/scooters at 45 km/l, Hatchbacks (Swift, i20, Baleno) at 18 km/l, Sedans (Honda City, Verna) at 15 km/l, and SUVs (Creta, Brezza, Nexon) at 12 km/l. These are approximate — enter your vehicle's actual ARAI-rated or real-world mileage for accurate results.

Yes. The Fuel Type selector lets you choose Petrol, Diesel, CNG, or Electric (EV). Selecting EV switches the unit to kWh and uses ~₹8/kWh by default. Enter your vehicle's real-world efficiency (km/kWh for EVs, km/l or km/kg for others) and the current fuel/electricity price for accurate results.

When you check 'Include Return Journey', the calculator doubles your entered distance before computing fuel and costs. So if you enter 300 km and enable round trip, the calculation uses 600 km. This is useful for day trips where you drive the same route back.

The total trip cost (fuel + all extra expenses) is divided equally by the number of travelers you enter. For example, if total cost is ₹6,000 and there are 4 travelers, each person's share is ₹1,500. This assumes cost sharing — adjust the traveler count to match who is splitting expenses.

Use the current fuel price at your local pump. As of 2025, petrol prices in India vary between ₹94–₹110 per litre depending on the city and taxes. Diesel is typically ₹85–₹95 per litre. You can check today's exact price at fuel price tracking sites or at your nearest petrol station.

Yes. There is a dedicated Toll Charges field in the Extra Trip Expenses section. Enter the total expected toll for your route (both ways if it's a round trip). India's NHAI FastTag toll calculator or Google Maps can help estimate toll charges for a specific highway route.
