How to unlock a PDF

1

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop the locked PDF or click to browse your device. The tool instantly analyzes its encryption and permission settings.

2

Review security analysis

See exactly what restrictions are active — printing, copying, editing, annotations, form filling, and content extraction — before taking any action.

3

Enter password (if required)

If the PDF requires a password to open, enter it in the password field. It is used only locally to decrypt your document and is never stored or transmitted.

4

Unlock and download

Click the unlock button. A new PDF with all restrictions removed is generated in your browser and downloads immediately — no waiting, no server involved.

When to use PDF unlock

Remove Printing Restrictions

Enable printing on PDFs received from clients, vendors, or forms that have print protection enabled.

Remove Copying Restrictions

Copy text from reports, contracts, or research papers that have text-extraction restrictions applied.

Remove Editing Restrictions

Edit or annotate PDFs that you authored or have legitimate access to but can no longer modify.

Remove Password Protection

Strip the opening password from your own PDFs when you want to share them freely without requiring recipients to enter a password.

Enable Form Filling

Unlock form-fill restrictions on official forms or questionnaires so they can be completed and re-submitted.

Archive Without Restrictions

Create an unrestricted copy of important documents for long-term archiving — future-proof formats have no artificial lock-in.

How PDF restrictions work

What Is PDF Unlock?

PDF unlock removes the encryption wrapper and permission flags that restrict what you can do with a document — print, copy, edit, or annotate. The underlying content is unchanged; only the lock is removed.

How PDF Restrictions Work

Restrictions are stored as integer bit-flags in the PDF's Encrypt dictionary. PDF readers check these flags and enforce them at the application level — they are not built into the page content itself.

Password-Protected PDFs

A user password prevents opening the file; an owner password controls permission changes. When you supply the correct password, the PDF streams are decrypted and can be re-saved without any encryption.

Browser-Based Processing

This tool uses pdf-lib, a pure JavaScript PDF library, to decrypt and re-save your document entirely inside your browser. Nothing is sent to any server at any point during the process.

Important: Lawful use only

This tool is intended for legitimate use cases: unlocking documents you authored, removing restrictions from files you have legal access to, or recovering documents you own but can no longer edit. Always respect copyright, licensing terms, and the rights of document owners. This tool does not crack unknown passwords and should never be used to circumvent protections on documents you are not authorized to access.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about PDF unlock, restriction removal, and password-protected PDFs.

If the PDF only has restrictions (printing, copying, editing) but does not require a password to open, you can remove those restrictions without any password — just upload and click unlock. If the PDF requires a password to open, you must provide that password. This tool cannot crack or guess unknown passwords.

Yes. If the PDF has editing restrictions set by the document creator but does not require an opening password, this tool removes them entirely. After downloading the unlocked file, you can edit it freely in any PDF editor.

Yes. Printing restrictions are stored as permission flags in the PDF's encryption dictionary. This tool clears those flags when saving the output, so the unlocked PDF can be printed from any viewer without limitation.

Yes, if you know the password. Enter the document's user password in the password field, then click unlock. The tool decrypts the file in your browser using that password and saves a new copy without any password or restrictions.

No. This tool does not crack, brute-force, or bypass password encryption. We only support removing a password when you already know it and can verify it. If you have lost your password, consider contacting the document author for a new copy.

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your PDF, your password, and the unlocked output never leave your device. We have no access to your files at any point.

This tool removes restrictions on: printing, copying text and images, editing and modifying, adding annotations and comments, filling form fields, and extracting content. All permission flags are cleared in the output PDF.

Some PDFs use AES-256 encryption (PDF 2.0 standard) which requires server-side libraries to process. Our browser-based tool supports RC4 and AES-128 encrypted PDFs. If unlock fails, the PDF may use an unsupported encryption method. Try opening the file in Adobe Acrobat with your password and saving a new copy first.
